RESUMO

Paratonsillar abscess (PTA) stands out among all otorhinolaryngological diseases, since it can cause life-threatening complications that develop in the shortest possible time due to the close connection of the cellular spaces of the head, neck and mediastinum. In addition to physical examination, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are routinely used to diagnose PTA, sonography is less often used. With the help of the latter, it is possible to reliably distinguish PTA from both paratonsillitis and a number of other diseases, including an aneurysm of the internal carotid artery, using the Doppler mode. However, there are significant gaps in the ultrasound diagnosis of PTA and paratonsillitis: the use of a percutaneous convex sensor is not described, there is no description of clear anatomical landmarks for reliable and rapid recognition of PTA, and diagnostically complete algorithms for verification and visualization of paratonsillitis and PTA using sonographic examination have not been developed. Our work is aimed at filling these gaps.

RESUMO

Ulcerative colitis (UC) may be associated with different extra-intestinal manifestations (EIM), which are often difficult to diagnose and treat, and may complicate the course of the disease. EIM are a multidisciplinary problem encountered by doctors of various specializations. However, many incidences of EIM in patients with UC remain unknown. The coexistence of UC and aseptic nasal abscess (ANA) is uncommon. Here, we describe two cases of ANA in young female patients with UC. ANA run in parallel with intestinal disease activity and led to necrosis of the septal cartilage. Moreover, pyoderma gangrenosum was described in one of them. Aseptic abscess syndrome should be kept in mind when a microbial factor is not identified, the diagnosis is not clear or a patient is not improving on appropriate antibacterial therapy. ANA can present as a rare complication of UC.

RESUMO

The authors analyzed noninfectious complications (dislocation of endoprosthesis head, periprosthesis fractures) in 8 patients out of 40 with hip arthroplasty. There were estimated clinical, biomechanical results and quality of life of the patients. An application of the external fixator-orthezes should be recommended in order to prevent complications of hip replacement. The wearing of brace is considered to be reasonable after revision interventions.

RESUMO

The results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy, conducted in 71 patients, suffering cholelithiasis, were analyzed. In early postoperative period an acute cholangitis have occurred in 2 (2.8%) patients, an acute pancreatitis--in 1 (1.4%), postoperative infiltrate--in 14(19.7%), suppuration of postoperative cicatrix--in 6 (8.4%); late compli- cations as a kind of postcholecystectomy syndrome was observed in 29 (40.8%) patients, and abdominal hernia--in 3 (4.2%).

RESUMO

The objective of the present work was to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment of the patients presenting with diffuse external otitis media with the application of Kombinil-Duo ear drops. The authors carried out a comparative study using Kombinil-Duo ear drops (n=30) and traditional methods (n=25). The study has demonstrated the advantages of the complication of Kombinil-Duo ear drops that allows to more rapidly eliminate such symptoms of diffuse external otitis media as otalgia, ear congestion, hyperemia, and skin infiltration in the external auditory canal.

RESUMO

Anterior active rhinomanometry (AARM) was used for objective investigation of nasal respiration in patients with nasal bone fractures. Twenty one patients with nasal septum deformation have undergone reconstructive septorhinoplasty in acute trauma, 33 patients -- standard nasal bone reposition. AARM proved its efficacy as a simple and convenient method of nasal obstruction assessment in acute trauma and can be successfully applied for determination of therapeutic policy and control of surgical intervention. Most patients with nasal bone fracture had preoperative low total volume flow and elevated nasal resistance. Nasal septum curvature and deformation of external nose structures are of importance in development of the pathology. One-stage reconstruction of the nasal septum and pyramid in acute trauma brings about significantly better long-term functional results compared to conventional closed nasal bone reposition.
